RISE AND SHINE FOR THE BEDROOM
Get ready for a wake up call, because today's bedrooms are much more than a rumpled bed and a chest of drawers.
Whether you're planning to revamp a master bedroom, a tiny guest room, a chaotic kids' space, or a detached in-law suite, current options in layout, decor, and furnishings are sure to inspire you. Today's layouts are flexible. Though the style may range from traditional prints to polished steel, the bedroom has evolved into a modern, multiuse space—while still serving its original role as a private refuge. Master bedrooms now harbor home offices, sunny window seats, home theaters, even art collections.
Master-suite schemes can create self-sufficient retreats and buffer zones, often integrating bath, walk-in closet, dressing area, his-and-her vanities, and makeup center into one seamless whole. And what about adding an overstuffed chair and a fireplace, an exercise alcove, or a private whirlpool and sauna?
If space is at a premium, hardworking storage built-ins can make the most of it. Look to the sleeping area for possibilities: platform beds, storage beds, lofts, pullouts, futons, and updated Murphy beds all gain you floor space.
And has anyone ever had enough closet space? You'll find both sophisticated modular cabinets and freestanding, one of a kind wardrobes and armoires. Racks, bins, pullouts, drawers, hooks, and other accessories are abundant. Now it's easy to put everything in its place (though keeping it there is another matter).
Today's bedroom can be a place for work. Whether you're telecommuting or simply scrolling through the household budget, computers, CPUs, printers, fax machines, and home copiers create new design challenges. Who wants to stare at all that clutter? Fortunately, built-ins and other options can tame it. And, of course, a bedroom is for relaxing. Surround-sound and home-theater units are showing up in lots of master bedrooms, suites, and multiuse guest rooms. You might add a coffee bar, sink, hot water dispenser, and under counter refrigerator or even a popcorn machine.
There's also new emphasis on light and openings walls of ganged windows, skylights, roof vaults. French and sliding doors can double as windows while leading the way to a sunny pocket deck or patio.
Why not grab a snack, fluff up the pillows, and adjust your reading light? Perhaps the bedroom of your dreams is but a few pages away.
PLANNING PRIMER
Whether it’s a luxurious master wing, a hardworking guest room, or simply a new color scheme you want to achieve, your project's success depends on good planning. This chapter can serve as a workbook for getting organized.
Think of bedroom design as a three step process. First, survey what you already have and analyze your options for improving it. Next, think about how to lay out space and use the components of your room the way they'll work best for you. Finally, consider the style, colors, and decorative touches that will pull together the look you want.
